LONTAR will cease publication with issue #10 in April 2018. We are now closed to submissions.

LONTAR is a biannual literary journal of Southeast Asian speculative fiction in English, published by Epigram Books in Singapore.

The editors of LONTAR are looking for quality literary writing with elements of the fantastic, which is in some way connected with the cultures, traditions, mythologies, folk religions, and/or daily life in Southeast Asia*. While we are happy to look at works by writers outside of the region, we want to actively encourage Southeast Asian writers to submit your work.

LONTAR is not a market for horror fiction, but we may consider dark fantasy; we are also not a market for erotica, although some sexual content (as long as it is integral to the plot) is acceptable. (And it should go without saying, but we're not interested in fan fiction.)

Please see the below categories (Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry and Sequential Art (Comics)) for specific descriptions of what we would like to consider, as well as payment information; please be sure to submit your work under the appropriate category to ensure that it goes to the correct editor. We also strongly recommend that you read an issue or two of LONTAR to become familiar with the types of writing that engage us enough to publish.

We will entertain simultaneous submissions, but request that you contact us immediately if your piece is bought elsewhere first. We do not consider unsolicited reprints (except in the Sequential Art category).

Do not send submissions for consideration via email, as they will be deleted unread.

Upon acceptance, your piece will appear in both the print and e-book editions of the journal; we also reserve the right to publish your piece as an extract on our website. We buy First Worldwide Print and Electronic Rights.

Please wait to hear from us about your submission before sending another; LONTAR is a labour of love, and although we will attempt to get back to you as soon as possible, please wait 90 days before querying about your submission. We regret the use of form letters, but are unable to send personalised rejections at this time.

* For our purposes, Southeast Asia consists of the following countries: Cambodia, Laos, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, and the Philippines. We may also include North and South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau, because even though they are technically not ASEAN countries, they are still underrepresented within East Asian speculative literature in English.

(We are not interested in stories that take place within Japan, Mainland China, or the Indian Subcontinent at this time.)
